Back to the Murray: New Chair brings local insight to regional tourism leadership
Murray Regional Tourism (MRT) has today announced the appointment of Mr Paul Geyer FAICD as its new Independent Chair, following the departure of Ms Wendy Greiner, who steps down after 12 years of exceptional service.
The leadership change was confirmed at MRT’s Annual General Meeting, marking a significant milestone for the cross-border organisation as it enters its next phase of growth and collaboration.
A decade of transformation and leadership
During her 12-year tenure, Ms Greiner has guided Murray Regional Tourism with unwaveringcommitment, integrity and vision. Under her leadership, the organisation has evolved from a developing regional body into one of regional Australia’s most respected and influential tourism organisations representing 13 local government partners and one of the country’s largest crossborder visitor economies.
Ms Greiner’s legacy includes driving visitation and strengthening regional cross-border collaboration between Victoria and New South Wales.
Her leadership has also seen MRT through some of the region’s most challenging periods including bushfires, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, all while continuing to drive strategic planning, advocacy and destination growth.
“Serving as Chair of Murray Regional Tourism has been a real privilege,” Ms Greiner said.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. Growing visitation, strengthening collaboration across two states and delivering projects and campaigns that have showcased The Murray as one of Australia’s iconic inland tourism destinations.”
“The passion and resilience of our operators and communities have been truly inspiring. I step down with confidence in the strength of the organisation and great optimism for its future under Paul’s leadership.”
A new chapter of opportunity
Incoming Chair Mr Paul Geyer FAICD brings more than 20 years of governance, leadership and strategy experience to the role. He has served as Chair of multiple regional organisations,
including the Wimmera Southern Mallee Development, Winemakers of Rutherglen and the San Remo Fishing Cooperative, and has previously held senior executive roles as a CEO and as State Manager with the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Having grown up in The Murray region at Sunnycliffs near Mildura, Mr Geyer brings both a personal connection to the area and extensive professional expertise in regional governance.
“I am honoured to take on the role of Chair at Murray Regional Tourism,” Mr Geyer said. “The Murray is one of Australia’s most distinctive and diverse regions, and tourism is central to both its identity and prosperity.”
In his first year as Chair, Mr Geyer will focus on strengthening cross-border collaboration, deepening partnerships with Visit Victoria and Destination NSW and progressing a refresh of the Murray Regional Tourism Destination Management Plan.
“The timing is ideal, with both states launching new visitor economy strategies,” he said. “This presents an opportunity to bring all local government partners together under a renewed, unified strategy that positions the Murray for continued growth and visibility.”
Mr Geyer said he is also eager to lead a review of MRT’s regional marketing approach to ensure the Murray’s unique stories and experiences continue to stand out in a competitive tourism landscape.
“Having grown up along the Murray, I understand firsthand the importance of tourism in creating resilient regional economies,” he said. “I look forward to working with the Board, industry partners and all levels of government to strengthen the visitor economy and ensure the Murray continues to thrive.”
Continuity and momentum
MRT Chief Executive Officer Cameron Sutton thanked Ms Greiner for her outstanding leadership and welcomed Mr Geyer to the role.
“Wendy’s contribution has been nothing short of transformational,” Mr Sutton said.
“Her ability to unite stakeholders across two states under a shared vision has positioned The Murray as one of Australia’s most dynamic regional destinations.
“Paul brings exceptional governance expertise, strategic insight and regional understanding. His appointment ensures continuity and renewed energy as MRT continues to deliver value for the region’s visitor economy.”
Mr Sutton said the changeover at the AGM ensures a smooth handover and ongoing leadership stability.
“Murray Regional Tourism enters this next chapter with confidence, building on strong foundations and long-term partnerships across the region.”
